How's life in the City of Blues?

Music is the heart of local entertainment

From listening to a band on iconic Beale Street, to seeing a show at the historic Orpheum Theatre, or enjoying a concert on the lawn at the Overton Park Shell amphitheater, music is one of many reasons to enjoy life in Memphis.

  • Memphis has one of the top urban park systems in the nation, covering 7,000 acres.
  • The food… Memphis’ legendary cuisine holds a variety of flavors, and its specialty: the barbecue!
  • With the variety of local breweries and live music, Memphis has a great nightlife. The city is home to the iconic music festival Memphis in May.

Memphis: a large and friendly city!

Memphis is one of the largest cities in the U.S., yet it maintains that small town feel. It is home to the Memphis Tigers (go TIGER BLUE!), a remarkable variety of food and breweries, and greenlines that connect you throughout the area. Memphis is quintessential southern hospitality…it doesn’t get any friendlier elsewhere! Memphis is also a melting pot of many cultures, represented by its citizenry, and in return creates a huge support mechanism for students attending the University of Memphis.

When we talk about best bang for your buck, our cost of living is hard to beat. In other cities, you must make more money to have the same basic services Memphis offers. For example, your 12-month stipend as a doctoral student is $2,100. If attending UCLA in California, you must receive almost $4,800/month because their cost of living is so high. Therefore, in Memphis your dollar goes a lot further: better living, affordable food, larger buying power.
